Perhaps you’re a new teacher? Perhaps a well experienced teacher that’s new to a lower elementary grade? Or perhaps you feel your reading program needs a fresh approach? Either way, you’ll know that there are many reading programs and resources out there, that come with a high price tag, and you don’t know where to begin!
TEACHING STUDENTS HOW TO READ
There’s a proven process to learning to read that any teacher or parent can adopt, it’s all through phonics!
Through decades of research, evidence shows that students learn to read by building their phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. This is finally reflected in the new Alberta curriculum! The problem is that there are few teacher education courses that instruct upcoming teachers on how to teach reading skills.
Firstly, ditch the word lists! Children can’t possibly know every word by memory, and even for students that have an awesome memory, what happens when they come across an unknown word? Well at best they’ll guess, otherwise, wait for help! However, when teaching to read using phonics, students are given the skills to decode words, skills that will be applied for life!
TEACHING STUDENTS HOW TO READING THROUGH PHONICS
A systematic phonics system needs to be adopted daily in the classroom so that explicit phonics skills are taught, developed and mastered. When teaching phonics, the goal is to build students’ phonemic awareness from the smallest sounds to more complex sound patterns in order to decode words. There are many phonics programs and resources, the choice can be somewhat over-whelming!
All that you really need, is a set of sound cards and the knowledge of how to teach sounds and develop students phonemic awareness through play-based activities, and you’ll have your own, engaging reading program!
Following extensive training, I’ve taught students to read (mostly grade 1) for 10 years and I’ve personally witnessed the huge growth that my students have accomplished, through their knowledge of phonics and the ability to decode words.
